I was going for a long run through Franklin Park last year a little before dusk, just daydreaming. As the sun started to fade into the treeline on the horizon, I began to wonder how safe it was to be alone in the park this late. I started to imagine a man stepping out into my path and pulling a gun on me.
I was surprised by the reaction in my mind. I was filled with compassion and even love for my imaginary attacker. Instead of feeling fear I felt present and truly alive.
At that moment I realized that when faced with the threat of death, all of the bullshit we get hung up on just seems meaningless. We’re left only with a sense of what’s truly important to us and a profound understanding of our own identity.
Then I started to think about humanity as a whole. If there was ever a moment in history when our whole species faced the threat of death, it’s right now. In a sense we all have a gun to our head. Doesn’t that mean that our whole global society could wake up to what’s important to us all, let go of all of our bullshit, and reach a new understanding of our true identity as humans?
All at once the words rang out in my head “I’ve got a love so fierce I can penetrate the hate, cuz I’m right here, no fear, surrounded by a world I can’t fall out of.”
