about
Nearly everyone in the room was in tears. Even my own cheeks were a bit salty, despite my resistance to appear so vulnerable. I was leading a “WakeUp” experience for a group of college activists and we had just completed “The Milling”, a powerful exercise developed by my hero Joanna Macy.
At that time in my life I was struggling with despair. I was frustrated with the world, frustrated with myself, and I felt disconnected from everyone around me. It felt like no one else could understand the pain I was experiencing, so I just put my head down and soldiered on with my work.
But then in that room full of my peers, I could feel with my whole body that I was not alone in my pain. Every one of us had been suppressing our emotions, but now they were out on the table, and the effect was incredible. We had discovered what was behind that pain, which was a deep love for the world and a profound desire to protect it. We felt more connected to each other than ever, knowing that everyone in the room cared so deeply. I felt powerful; motivated; unstoppable.
At every Occupy encampment, at every climate change protest, at every rally for human rights, we see people coming together through shared pain. We see real power rising up from the courageous choice to open our eyes and our hearts to this world. We will not run from the pain, we will not be afraid of it, nor will we be conquered by it. We will let it flow through us, making our hearts pound with passion, making our blood flow with life and love, and making our bodies move into action. We will unite around our shared pain and it will give us hope. We won’t get through this weather alone.
lyrics
Kids crowd around the radio
Snowflakes dance in the morning rays
Pray for no school so they can go and play
I stare at the kitchen table
Bills to pay
Pray I can get to work today
All the rain, and the sun don’t feel the same
Seems hope just ain’t a friend I can depend on these days
I wanna lose faith, but I know you feel the same
The pain binds us together, we won’t get through this weather alone
I don’t know how I got here
I don’t know when things got so wrong
I been under water for so long
Got $200 bucks for the ring babe
Who should we pay?
Whoever leans hardest on me today
All the rain, and the sun don’t feel the same
Seems hope just ain’t a friend I can depend on these days
I wanna lose faith, but I know you feel the same
The pain binds us together, we won’t get through this weather alone
All the rain
You got your flat screen plasma
Your 401 k
Don’t you come cryin to me today
I’ve been on hold for days now
The end of the line
These goddamn people, they just don’t get hard times
All the rain, and the sun don’t feel the same
Seems hope just ain’t a friend I can depend on these days
I wanna lose faith, but I know you feel the same
The pain binds us together, we won’t get through this weather alone
